Note, Onwa X Band radar sets are designed for commercial use and are widely used by professionals mariners in Asia. The performance is considerably better than radars produced for leisure sailors For example, the 60 cm Radome KRA-1007 has a horizontal beam width of just 4 0 degrees – compare that to leisure radars where this is likely to be much greater (think of beam width as focus).

Just a mention on the Radome – it is quite heavy and probably too large and weighty to mount on a sailing vessel’s mast. I have mine on a 3 metre pole on the stern quarter of my 28′ sailing boat and it works great.
Frequently asked question: Why is the Radome 60cm, other makes are smaller?
The size of the transmitting antenna in the dome directly affects the beam width (focus) and the larger the antenna the smaller will be the beam width. It follows that to achieve a small beam width a large antenna is required – hence the size. To illustrate how increasing the size of the transmitting antenna effects the beam width, 55 cm antenna in the 60 cm dome has a horizontal beam width of 4 degrees, a 120 cm open array antenna is 1.9 degrees and 1.8 open array antenna is just 1.2 degrees. Whilst it is true that other make radars for the leisure market do have a smaller Radome – they also have higher beam width figures. It may be worth noting that top of the range Furuno radars also have a 60cm Radome.

KRA-1009
A brand new Radome product specially designed to be used as a networked radar system for use with KP1299 and KM series plotters. This model Radome is smaller and lighter than the 1007 above, making it very suitable for leisure vessels and smaller commercials yet retaining the great Onwa quality. Smaller (50cm dome) and lighter (8.8K), horizontal beam-width 5 degrees.
