An essential item to connect a serial or NMEA0183 device to a computer that doesn’t have a dedicated serial port installed. Serial ports were, at one time, quite usual on computers and lap tops. Today, this is not the case and an external device such as this is needed to connect serial and NMEA to a computer. This is not just a serial connector to USB cable, there is electronics built into the device that will emulate a serial port so that your PC thinks that it has one installed.
This tool is essential if you intend to set-up or amend the AIS details in an Onwa KS200A, a 200A-SART or a KC-2W bi-directional NMEA2K/0183 converter. In addition it can be used to connect a serial or NMEA0183 device to a computer that uses Open CPN.
Consisting of a specially selected Serial to USB dongle coupled to a 9 pin D-Sub PCB with either push to fit connectors or screw down types depending upon the version that we have in stock. The serial adaptors that we supply have the latest version chips installed that we have tested for compatibility with late PC operating systems: MACs have not been tested with these devices.
Note,… All AIS equipped devices purchased from AVES Marine are programmed at no cost before delivery. However, if there is an intention to change the settings stored in an Onwa Black Box AIS transceiver then this tool becomes essential.
