The KAP 866 Auto Pilot from Onwa Marine. A relatively inexpensive Auto Pilot controller, can be fitted to most steering systems, hydraulic or motor driven, apart from tiller steering. Particularly ideal for marrying to an older steering system where the mechanical steering system is completely sound but the control system is old, broken or a just simply isn’t able to work with today’s MFD chart plotters.
To introduce the KAP866, there is an excellent description of the Pilot produced by our customer, Roger Gasper, well known author of Crossing The Thames Estuary. Roger’s description is excellent and has been published as an instructional video on YouTube. He describes the functions and setting of the KAP866 in the first part of his video and then an at-sea part where he follows a pre-set up route in his Onwa KM12X, multi-function chart plotter. His route is a challenging one and demonstrates how well the Pilot and KM12x are able to work together to follow a pre-set route.
